BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Sir Andrew Davis, Leonard Elschenbroich

For the first time since The Sands Centre starting promoting symphonic concerts, Sir Andrew Davis, one of the most distinguished of British conductors, is coming to Carlisle to conduct the BBC Philharmonic. This world renowned conductor will begin his programme with the romantic prelude to Act 1 of Wagner’s opera Tristan and Isolde.

Cellist Leonard Elschenbroich will then join the orchestra for a performance of Dvorak’s Cello Concerto, a quintessential Czech work that combines Dvorak’s great lyrical gift with some of the most opulent music composed for cello and orchestra. Andrew Davis is a renowned Elgar interpreter and we’re very pleased to have, for the first time, a performance of Elgar’s rumbustious Falstaff, the wonderful musical depiction of one of Shakespeare’s greatest characters.

The BBC Philharmonic is based at MediaCityUK in Salford and performs an annual season of concerts at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall, as well as regular concerts at other venues across the north of England. As one of the BBC’s six performing groups, the majority of the orchestra’s concerts are broadcast on BBC Radio 3. The BBC Philharmonic is supported by Salford City Council, enabling the orchestra to build active links in the local area through a busy learning and community programme.
