Our first all-baroque concert; and who better to lead it than the outstanding champion of period music, Rachel Podger.
She's put together a programme that showcases the period and its many guises, from dazzling flamboyance to disarming simplicity. Bach's Air on the G String, the second movement of his Suite No 3 is a textbook example of measured restraint, whilst Vivaldi's L'Estro Armonico is an intoxicating flurry of rhythmic drive.
Although less known today, Purcell, Fux and Telemann enjoyed significant celebrity status back then. Purcell's music for The Fairy Queen was a huge hit, as was Fux's book on counterpoint - the must-read for composers of the 18th Century. Telemann was the most successful composer in Germany, far outstripping the popularity stakes compared to his friend and contemporary Bach.
Join us as we explore one of the richest and liveliest chapters in music history.
