Femi Temowo is an exciting guitarist whose style is firmly rooted in his Nigerian background. Femi’s early influences ranged from Fela Kuti to Charlie Parker, but it was listening to the great Wes Montgomery that caused him to pursue his passion for the guitar and jazz.
One of Femi’s early successes was being asked by Soweto Kinch to join his quartet. This led to Mercury Prize nominations, a BBC Jazz award and several MOBO awards. His slick and melodic playing means he’s in great demand, performing with many top names such as George Benson, Courtney Pine, Roachford and Dee Dee Bridgewater. He also accompanied Amy Winehouse and was her musical director.
Such an eclectic range has been widened still more by his own projects which include his forthcoming album Orin Meta (“Three Songs” in Yoruba) due out in September 2015. A fusion of Nigerian folk sounds and rhythms, combined with lush jazz harmonies are brought to you by Femi, with Ernesto Simpson on drums, Karl Rasheed Abel on bass and Jonathan Idiagbonya on piano.
