The Kit Hillbillies formed in the Tamar Valley 15 years ago as a latter-day old-time string band. Their banjo/fiddle/guitar sound, laced with soaring vocal harmonies, gradually entwined itself around modern classics from Johnny Cash to the Clash. The band still play orthodox folk material from the Carter Family era. But this now rubs shoulders with anything from Hank Williams and Jimmie Rodgers onwards.
Their latest venture pairs them up with a double bassist and a drummer from the Plymouth music scene. These two have a background in mid-20th century styles like swing and rockabilly. The result is a percussive, dancy acoustic sound with syncopation to the fore. All of a sudden, it’s obvious how this rootsy folk music really did contain the early seeds of rock and roll.
Pork Chop is a banjo player and singer who also has his roots in Calstock Parish. An all-round entertainer of the old-school, he’s a true one-off, every bit as unique as his full stage name, Pork Chop with a Cider Banjo. He performs with a mixture of musicians backing him on everything from cajón to ukelele. The result is the distinctively laid-back, good-time sound of Pork Chop with a Cider Banjo & Friends.
