Playing Tubular Bells
One of the all-time great classic albums, Tubular Bells, is performed live by Tubular Brass, a specially formed 28-piece brass band made up of some of the UK’s leading players.
Plus, in the first half of the concert the ensemble presents Mary Casio, a new commission for brass band and ’70s analogue synthesisers by Hannah Peel, a young ‘next generation' electronic composer who grew up playing in colliery brass bands.
Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells stayed in the UK charts for 273 weeks, becoming one of the best-selling albums of all time. Mary Casio pays affectionate tribute to it and the context of ’70s prog concept albums, together with the influences of electronica pioneers Daphne Oram and Delia Derbyshire.
Its theme is an intergalactic journey from Earth (Barnsley, Yorkshire) to the constellation of Cassiopeia.
