Matt Carmichael, Jay Verma

Heralded by BBC Music Magazine as ‘a distinctive new voice in a crowded scene’, saxophonist and composer Matt Carmichael is rapidly growing his audience globally with a powerfully emotive blend of jazz and folk music. Today he performs with the pianist Jay Verma, whose distinctive voice, original mix of influences and phenomenal technique have propelled him to the epicentre of the thriving London jazz scene.

Carmichael says: “I first met Jay at a jam session in my first week of music college in London (although I ended up moving back to Glasgow the next week!) and we’ve stayed in touch ever since. I’ve always been drawn to the energy and emotional commitment Jay brings to every musical situation and I’m really excited to perform duo with him at St George’s. Duo is one of my favourite scenarios because of the direct line of communication, freedom and intimacy it brings to the music. This improvised concert will be based on the music from my albums Marram, Where Will The River Flow as well as newer material.”
