Russian Connections
Joy and James Lisney return to St George’s following last season’s sensational Beethoven cycle. Their recital features the best of Russian cello music, ranging from Stravinsky and Piatigorsky’s virtuosic transcriptions from the ballet Pulcinella – to the passionate romanticism of Rachmaninov’s huge sonatas. At the heart of the recital lies Britten’s Suite opus 87, inspired by Tchaikovsky’s folk song arrangements and the Russian ‘Kontakion for the Departed’.
