Rebetiko Carnival 2016 Presents Homage To Tsitsanis

Arguably the greatest icon of Greek music, Vasilis Tsitsanis (1915–1984) lifted rebetiko from its underground origins, revolutionizing its sound through his ingenious creativity.

Combining styles and melodies from a range of backgrounds, his music claims its identity through the pain of every common Greek and in turn they honour his tribute by making his works the music of a nation.

Rebetiko Music – Rebetiko is the music of an urban sub culture of musicians called 'rebetes'. Although they openly emerged in Greece in the 1920’s, Rebetiko music is a rich synthesis of music from all over Greece that expresses the pain and suffering of the people at the time. In a heartfelt way of reflecting life, these songs can be full of humour and profound beauty.
