Sidney Bruhl, a famous successful writer of stage thrillers, is suffering from writer’s block. He's not had a new hit in years and money - his wife's money - is running out.

When it appears that a script written by one of his students, Clifford, is sure to be a hit, Sidney jokingly refers to the idea of murdering Clifford in order to steal the play, in conversation with Myra, his wife. Or is it a joke? Is Clifford really in danger? Is Myra?
