Birmingham Comedy Festival - The Best In Live Stand-Up Comedy: Elis James, Sean Collins, JoJo Smith, Matt Rees
Birmingham Comedy Festival is an annual city?wide event. Volunteer led, the festival made its debut in 2001, and quickly established itself as one of the city’s most popular events. In 2011, 50,000 people attended the festival.
A list of those who’ve appeared at previous festivals reads like a who’s?who of contemporary comedy, and includes Michael McIntyre, Lee Evans, Peter Kaye, Lenny Henry, Jimmy Carr, Alan Carr, Tim Minchin, The Fast Show, Stephen Merchant and Frankie Boyle. Alongside the TV names are an equally long list of local names, including Ted Chippington, Mrs Barbara Nice, Jo Enright, James Cook, Karen Bayley and others.
Please note that the artists appearing may be subject to change.
Cardiff-based stand-up comedian. A versatile comic actor whose character creation 'Rex' is a regular feature on Rhod Gilbert's BBC Radio Wales show, Elis' profile has been boosted with frequent appearances on BBC Radio One Wales, two critically acclaimed Edinburgh solo shows (The Most Cautious Little Boy in Wales – 2009, and Daytripper – 2010) plus numerous appearances on the UK comedy circuit including tour support act for Rhod Gilbert.
For Elis's 2009 Edinburgh Fringe offering, The Most Cautious Little Boy In Wales, he was subsequently selected for the Best Of The Edinburgh Fest Australian tour, an honour that has been bestowed in previous years to the likes of Dylan Moran, Ross Noble, Simon Pegg and Ardal O'Hanlon. He has also extensively toured Daytripper at the Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane comedy festivals.
'He hypnotises the audience into loving him. There's also a laugh every ten seconds or so which overall makes it a complete joy' (Time Out)
'An intensely likable performer, he manages to get the audience to share in the heat of his unlikely passion, and you'll be rooting for him throughout his various misadventures' (The Guardian).

Sean honed his unique, storytelling style over 18 years. In 2000, his hard work and determination led to his receiving two prestigious Canadian Comedy Award nominations for 'Best Male Stand Up' and for his half hour 'Comic's Comedy Special' on CBC.
Fuelled by the desire to play to a more international audience, Sean left Canada for the UK and, within the five years that he has resided in Britain, he has written and performed three highly successful Edinburgh Festival shows, receiving rare, five star reviews and one of only a few Best of Fest accolades.
Sean Collins tour dates
'In the last four years JoJo Smith has gone from open spot, to national late-night television star. A foul mouthed earthy comedian she has proved to be a hit with Birmingham audiences since her debut three years ago' (Glee)
'Raunchy comedienne, very, very, very, funny' (London Evening Standard).
JoJo Smith tour dates
Welsh Unsigned Stand Up winner 2011, Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year 2012 and BBC Radio 2 New Comedy Award 2012 finalist.
'A properly original comedy mind' (The Guardian)
'With his somewhat miserable persona he enthralls his audiences through his skilfully crafted stories' (Funhouse Comedy).
