A centenary tribute with a difference: Pierre-Laurent Aimard leads us on an extraordinary and brilliantly original tour of one hundred years of music featuring over twenty composers in one concert. Aimard’s itinerary takes in Kurtág’s whimsical games and Ives’ quirky fantasias and the ferocious momentum of Harrison Birtwistle and Ligeti.
Along the way are fleeting glimpses familiar to Aldeburgh Festival audiences – music from recent guests George Benjamin, Elliott Carter and Marco Stroppa. There are radical new compositional departures distilled at the keyboard in pivotal works by Schoenberg, Boulez and Stockhausen; and Debussy, Murail, and Messiaen finding beauty in the seemingly infinite possibilities within the piano’s harmonic palette. There are moments that seem to question the piano’s role – Lachenmann’s ingenious, Guero – and (in Cage’s now infamous concept) even the nature of music itself.
