In the opening sequence, Marlene meets famous women from history, who behave like a gang of city career women out on the town and become increasingly drunk and maudlin, as it is revealed how each has suffered.

The stories of these women parallel the characters in Marlene's modern-day office. The final scene reveals the life that Marlene has left behind and the sacrifices she too has made in order to achieve success.
