Jolie Holland
Jolie Holland
by Meg
Now on her fourth studio album, the soon-to-be released The Living and the Dead, Texan singer songwriter Jolie Holland has proved herself as one of America's great female artists. Her songwriting may fuse traditional American country, gospel, bluesgrass and rockabilly, but her spine-tingling vocals and feisty lyrics give her music a much more contemporary edge, with live performances that command silence from anyone lucky enough to be present. Stand out tracks include Old Fashioned Morphine and Mad Tom of Bedlam from 2004's Escondida, The Littlest Birds from Catalpa and Crush In The Ghetto from 2006's Springtime Can Kill You. And you don't just have to take my word for it - Tom Waits is a big fan too!

Glam Chops
Glam Chops
by Gareth
In this current climate of hip NME bands trying to be the next Arctic Monkeys or Bloc Party, it makes a refreshing change to find a band trying to recreate the glitter image and sounds of Sweet, T-Rex and Slade. After forming Art Brut in 2003, Eddie Argos has now founded Glam Chops. The 70s sounds of this current side-project has become referred to as something of an indie supergroup, with Eddie on vocals joined by Vessel of mid-90's art band David Devant & His Spirit Wife, plus Stephen Gilchrist (Graham Coxon's drummer), Tim (of Bath promoters Purr) and Paul (of Guided Missile Records). Their stage attire consists of glittery suits, giant platform boots and outlandish make up - quite a contrast then to Art Brut's usual indie suits and jeans! With hand claps, foot stomps and regular shouts of 'Hey!', it's like Mud's Tiger Feet never went away. Glam Chops are guaranteed to raise a smile, as their anthem Don't Be Glum, Be Glam will testify!

Accidental Death of an Anarchist by Northern Broadsides
by Pete
The Northern Broadsides are renowned for their modernisation of Shakespeare, with fresh, energetic, thought provoking performances of well worn plays. This version of Dario Fo's anarchistic opus looks to reinforce the Broadsides as one of Britain's best touring theatre groups. The play itself is a humourous, though sometimes dark, look at one of Italy's most important events in modern history. Fo weaves political ideal with humour and humanity, leaving the audience to question modern society and the trust we place in government organisations.
