It's the 1970s. Betty, Reeny, Vera and their men - 'superior' council-house dwellers - regard themselves as a close-knit family, a team, despite their generally concealed jealousies, possessiveness and occasional recrimination. When Betty's daughter, Sandra, announces she is pregnant and intends to live unmarried with her student lover, Tim, the news has devastating results. Tim himself is unhappy about the arrangements and tries to make Sandra realise she has responsibilities - but he's in for a surprise as well.
