Blue Velvet 
A true modern masterpiece as David (Twin Peaks) Lynch lifts the lid on small town, 'apple pie' America to reveal a hideous reality. Essentially a detective story, wholesome heroes Kyle MacLachlan and Laura Dern enter a twilight world of sexual perversion, murder and drug abuse, inhabited by the terrifying figures of Dennis Hopper (in one of his finest roles) and the seductively masochistic Isabella Rossellini. A modern Hitchcockian puppetmaster, Lynch manipulates his audience into psychological chaos, thus making you more receptive to his own dark vision. Great soundtrack too!
