The Soloist tells the real-life story of L.A. Times reporter Steve Lopez's relationship with Nathaniel Ayers, a homeless man who had been a promising musician before his time at Juilliard was derailed by mental illness. At first, Lopez approaches Ayers as just another story idea in a city of millions. But as he begins to unearth the mystery of how this alternately brilliant and distracted street musician wound up living in tunnels, it sparks an unexpected quest.
