Fish Tank (2009)
Set on a troubled council estate, Fish Tank tells the story of Mia (Katie Jarvis), a foul-mouthed 15-year-old girl who has been kicked out of school for unidentified reasons. Having recently fallen out with her best friend, she is now an outsider on the estate, rejected by the other girls her age and quick to hand out the odd head-butt to anyone who gives her a bit of lip. Her mother (Kierston Wareing) seems scarcely older than her - and only slightly more mature, making home life for Mia not much better than the one she leads outside. Katie Jarvis - who was cast after being spotted in a train station arguing with her boyfriend, whilst unemployed and homeless - is outstanding in this realistic urban tragedy. The incredibly intense ending is worth the admission price alone.
