Blood: The Last Vampire (2009)
When you decide to remake a classic Japanese animation such as the 2000 original of this tale of one girl's fight against her very real personal demons, one of the first questions the director should ask is, 'what was the original's theme?' and, 'what did the production studio try and tell us as an audience?' In this case it was 'we do 3D now so Pixar better watch out'. Unfortunately, this doesn't make a particularly riveting plot, especially when the animated version weighed in at around only 50 minutes in length. So whilst nine years ago audiences were amazed at the stunning combination of 3D effects and 2D animation, today the Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon style wire fighting and post The Crow nouveau gothic aesthetic just feels tired. For fans of cute girls with big swords there's probably something likeable to find here, but otherwise this is highly derivative work.
