The Spirit
In an adaptation of the classic comic strip series, deceased police officer Denny Colt (Gabriel Mach) returns from the dead, reborn as the mysterious masked superhero, The Spirit. In the classic formula of good versus evil, The Spirit's world is threatened by his arch enemy The Octopus (Samuel L Jackson) who is on a mission to wipe out the city. What ensues is a series of action-packed fights and chase scenes through rundown warehouses and waterfronts, all gripping yet playful in an old-skool Batman style. Along the way The Spirit encounters an array of beautiful women who attempt to seduce him or lose him in equal measure, from the femme fatale secretary Silken Floss (Scarlett Johansson) to the sexy jewel thief Sand Saref (Eva Mendes). Will The Spirit save her or will she kill him? Graphic novel enthusiasts will appreciate the attention to detail in the comic book noir-style backgrounds, scenery, costumes and beautiful women. However, the somewhat cheesy dialogue and superhero pastiches occasionally border on self-parody. Remember Warren Beatty and Madonna in Dick Tracy?
