Milk
Harvey Milk is perhaps an unknown name in the UK, but if this film from Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting, Last Days), starring Sean Penn, has anything to do with it, all that will change. Milk is the Biopic of the first openly gay elected official in the USA, and deals with the events prior to his assassination by fellow politician Dan White that rocked American politics in 1978. The film covers many of the causes and struggles Milk faces in his lifetime, including the suicide of a lover, the battle against Proposition 6 and his tense relationship with the political system in the United States. Whilst the narrative has a tendency to be a little erratic, the scenes presented here are well chosen and direct, and the performances are strong throughout the entire cast. Having already made it to most notable critics' top 10 films of 2008, this deeply affecting piece is a must see for anyone looking for soul, passion and thought in cinema.
