Pegasus Theatre is nearing the midway point of its major building programme with the majority of the structure being completed in October. Plans to incorporate a significant amount of art into the building is starting with a series of free weekend workshops led by the project’s commissioned artist Matthew Lane Sanderson on 10th and 11th October and on 14th and 15th November at 10am and 2pm. Matthew, a sculptor who specializes in metalwork with natural and organic themes, will be showing family groups and individuals how they can create their own piece of art that will be displayed in the new Pegasus Theatre. Using a technique he describes as ‘wire drawing’ those taking part will be able to make a 2 dimensional sculpture within a frame on any theme. These metal ‘pictures’ will appear both internally and externally and will be the first exhibition to be on show once the building opens. Everyone will be able to make a unique print from their wire drawing on the day to take home and keep. The workshops and exhibition are the latest opportunity for community involvement offered by the Pegasus Theatre redevelopment project. Young people who attend workshops and courses run by the theatre, as well as many local residents, have been deeply involved in developing plans for the building, its activities and future. They, along with other family members, will be among the first to take part in the workshops which have already proved to be extremely popular. A Cambridge based artist, Matthew’s work has attracted a great deal of interest around the country and he has been commissioned for an exciting range of projects (The Corpus Clock, Eater of Time – a timepiece designed as mythological style creature with moving parts – the Taylor Library, Corpus Christi Cambridge; Benefactors Column – a series of glass seed ‘wings’ mounted on a 2 storey column – Cheshire Science Centre, Warwick School, Warwick; The Sprinting Afghan Hound – a life-size, cast bronze portrait, bisected and complete with full skeleton - Royal Dick Veterinary centre, Edinburgh).
