More Information

Human League

Formed in the late 1970s by Sheffield-based computer programmers Ian Craig Marsh and Martyn Ware, Human League evolved into one of the seminal 80s electro pop bands. Fronted by former hospital porter, Philip Oakey - and featuring dancers Susan Ann Sulley and Joanne Catherall - the band went on to record some of the most influential songs of the decade.

The Zutons

The Zutons

From Liverpool UK with a glam-rock-boogie-vibe, this band are from the same stable that produced The Coral. However their second album "Tired Of Hanging' Around", showcases a new, heavier, beefier sound. Expect an improved, confident musicianship of five people with more soul than previously demonstrated on their debut record, during which they were still finding their feet. Frustrated but energised, jet-lagged yet raring to go, The Zutons are back with a big, ballsy album brimming with urgent saxophone and meaty riffs; swampy rhythms and pop to jump around to.

The Magic Numbers

The Magic Numbers

Two pairs of siblings, led by the prodigiously talented lead singer and songwriter Romeo, who make a beautiful sound emphasised by angelic three-part harmonies. The vocal mix brings to mind the music of sixties harmony groups, but there are influences from all over the place flawlessly combined. With a great set of original songs, this band are busy mapping out a timeless musical territory of their own. 'in Romeo they have a writer with an ear for arrangement and composition not witnessed since Brian Wilson'- Artrocker.

Candi Staton

Candi Staton

A legendary soul and disco singer whose massive seventies hits include 'Nights On Broadway' and 'Young Hearts Run Free'. Raw and ravaged, hers is a voice with a tera in it, singing songs of love, pain and hope. 'Staton deserves to be right up there alongside Aretha and Gladys in the soul pantheon'- Mojo.

Billy Bragg

Billy Bragg

Described by The Times as a 'National Treasure', Billy Bragg's brand of socially and politically aware punk-folk has made a remarkable dent in the British conscience and made his name as one of Britain's most popular and out-spoken singer/songwriters. Drawing on the folk tradition of protest song, and the punk sensibilities of direct action, Billy Bragg has made a name for himself as an accomplished and inspirational musician, and as a charged and pro-active activist.

Dreadzone

Dreadzone

One of the country's top reggae and dub acts, founded in 1993 by Greg Roberts and Tim Bran. Their debut album 360° set the stage for the follow up, Second Light, to be cited as a favourite of John Peel's and saw them play at Glastonbury just one year after their formation. Continuing to record and release new music, Dreadzone for many years hosted Dubweiser at Notting Hill Arts Club, and subsequently released Once Upon A Time in 2005. Their continued popularity remains a testament to their presence in British music.

The Kabeedies

This feverishly exciting four-piece are from Norwich. They have inspired quotes such as : 'Gorgeous, wonky Candy-pop with boy/girl vocals. You’d have to have a heart of stone not to love this. The Kabeedies are a suspicious gathering of some boys and a girl who like to concoct new ways of baffling the human ear. Their slightly damaged minds dream up gleeful pop tunes and a live show that leaves audience members dying for their next fix of sweat and gaiety' (Cherryade Records).

Its A Buffalo

'Curious, melodic fun - an Akoustik Anarkhy roster which seems to bring no end of treats out of Manchester town. This 4-piece play fantastically melodic pop, and rip-roaring harmonies.
