Goldie Lookin' Chain

Goldie Lookin' Chain

With more razzle-dazzle jewellery than Mr T, this novelty rap act from South Wales manage to make The Streets' Mike Skinner appear positively middle-class. The 15 chavs that make up GLC were somehow signed to independent label EastWest on the dubious strength of a handful of tracks that had been burnt to CDR and passed around the pubs of Newport. Now, armed with songs about smoking weed, shagging monkeys and, erm, 'cider enemas', they are headlining gigs around the UK.

James Yuill

Buraka Som Sistema

An Angolan-influenced genre, inspired by techno that was made for teenagers to go crazy to. 'The best live bands I've seen in the past two years” – Gilles Peterson, Radio 1. 'One of the most exciting and innovative dance acts in the world' – NME.

Altern-8

Altern-8

'Top one, nice one, get sorted!' Whether you loved them or h-8-ed them, no-one could ignore the yellow mask-wearing and industrial overall-clad DJ duo in the early 90s, as they produced a string of top 20 hits including 'Activ-8', 'Evapor-8' and 'Hypnotic St-8'. Watch yer bass bins.

Eat Static

Techno-based, UFO-obsessed side project of ex-Ozric Tentacles members. In the early days there was 'Abduction' and 'Implant', slamming, sci-fi electro trance. That was over a decade ago, now producing abrasive techno anthems and psychedelic Latin grooves, Eat Static remain one of the best live dance acts on the scene.

65daysofstatic

65daysofstatic

Bastila

Horn-infused party-rompingl. ‘Mariachi reggae’ one fan called them, with a blues-punk oomph.

Kid Carpet

Kid Carpet

He's a one-man electronic band, playing broken-hearted modern music, with wit and style (and a few props). He recently appeared on the new ITV music show 'Earshot', playing a one-day tour of London. That's right, multiple shows in one town on the same day! Live he plays an electro-pop cover of Van Halen's 'Jump' that features voice samples from Ivor Cutler. And his single 'Sh*t Dope' samples the 80's Children's TV programme Choc-a-bloc. Expect dodgy samples, carboot sale keyboards, kids toys, plastic guitar solos, dodgy singing, pathos aplenty and sellotape.
