The Streets

The Streets - or Mike Skinner as he's known to his friends - playing an 'extraordinary mix of garage, rap and anything else he can get his hands on' (NME). Whether you love or hate the music, it's originality and impact on the scene is undeniable. His debut album 'Original Pirate Material' was a brilliant blend of urban poetry, cut-up beats and a wicked sense of humour. For many artists, this initial success would have been an unbearable burden, but Skinner returned in late 2003 with the outstanding 'A Grand Don't Come For Free'. An urban concept album, the street-slang lyricism of the original record was complemented with a new found level of emotional maturity. He has raised the bar again, but can he go higher?

Goldie Lookin' Chain

With more razzle-dazzle jewellery than Mr T, this novelty rap act from South Wales manage to make The Streets' Mike Skinner appear positively middle-class. The 15 chavs that make up GLC were somehow signed to independent label EastWest on the dubious strength of a handful of tracks that had been burnt to CDR and passed around the pubs of Newport. Now, armed with songs about smoking weed, shagging monkeys and, erm, 'cider enemas', they are headlining gigs around the UK.

Middleman (3)

Middleman write vibrant, catchy tunes with booming basslines, bleepy melodies and smart lyrics, impossible to pigeonhole & raucous live. The four piece from Leeds kicked up a storm with their self produced 3 track demo recorded in late 2006. On Radio 1 Zane Lowe gave plays and props, Steve Lamacq crowned them 'Unsigned Band Of The Week' and Huw Stephens not only invited them in to record a Maida Vale session but also declared them his 'hottest tip for 2007'.
