The Antikythera Mechanism: Decoding An Ancient Greek Mystery
Discovered in a shipwreck more than one hundred years ago, the Mechanism is now on display in the National Archaeological Museum, Athens, Greece. The fragments consist of corroded bronze gearwheels, dials and inscriptions that have puzzled and fascinated scientists who have attempted to decode its mysteries. The Mechanism was designed to calculate complex cycles of mathematical astronomy, including the movements of the sun, moon and planets. However, latest research by the AMRP reveals that it also contained a sporting calendar, with a dial showing the four-year cycle of ancient Greek athletic games, including the Olympic Games.
