More Information

Four Tet

Four Tet

The solo electronic project of Kieran Hebden of post-rock band, Fridge. What you get here is a beguiling and baffling journey into sound; a mixture of folk-inflected electronica and lo-fi murmurings incorporating elements of jazz, techno and hip-hop. His first two releases were NME singles of the week and his 2005 album, Everything Ecstatic has secured him the title of King of folktronica.

Mum

Mum

An Icelandic outfit whose live sets see them beautifully meshing some dense but intricate programming with gorgeous vocals and richly textured melodies.

The Mae Shi

The Mae Shi

Electronics, live instrumentation, electric vocals, catchier-than-hell tunes and a sound midway between seventies glam-rock, eighties new-romanticism and modern electro. They're The Mae Shi and they'll more than likely blow you away.

Frightened Rabbit

Frightened Rabbit

Guitar based indie pop from Selkirk in Scotland. This band stands out straight away with their gentle piano dominated opening bars progressing to 3-minute slices of urgent indie-punk, with a nicely shambling, lo-fi production.

Jeffrey Lewis

Jeffrey Lewis

Often associated with his friends, The Moldy Peaches, New York's Jeffrey Lewis peddles a similar peddle of lo-fi anti-folk indie singing and songwriting, combining equal measures of humour, innocence, fragility and sadness. Singing largely of his own life and experiences, as though filtered through the pages of a comic book, he's a modern day woody Guthrie on a punk rock tip.

For more information, see the website

Bearsuit

Stop-start boy-girl rock-cutie-killer six-piece Bearsuit mix everything from cinematic waltzes to catchy electro disco and hard punk screaming riot grrl noise. A mix of Belle and Sebastian, Huggy Bear, and Sonic Youth with electronic twists and turns, and screamy art punk. Pop, noise and nonsense, all in bite-size chunks.

Nina Nastasia

Nina Nastasia

Hearing her voice is like being wrapped in silk sheets and slowly rocked into a blissful state of peace and relaxation. She is compared to Nick Cave and PJ Harvey, but Nina Nastasia has a dark, unnerving strength all of her own. The US has produced few original singer-songwriters so in touch with its contemporary condition.

Los Campesinos!

Los Campesinos!

Alt-pop NME favourites from Cardiff, making waves with their brand of power-punk-pop laced with sixties psychedelia and prog-rock. '...the kind of thing that's so terrifyingly promising it gives you a headache just thinking about it.' - This is fake DIY.

Olafur Arnalds

Olafur Arnalds

Fragile, emotional, classical indie music is a good way to describe Icelandic artist Olafur Arnalds' music. An obvious comparison is to Sigur Ros, but Arnalds is sculpting his own epic, string-laden compositions.

Listed on Ents24.com since: Nov 2007

Calvin Johnson

Calvin Johnson

Underground DJ, producer and engineer, Calvin was part of Beat Happening, an underground rock band that became an integral part of the Washington music scene. He also formed Dub Narcotic Sound System and also performed as a member of The Halo Benders. His label K Records continues to attempt to dissuade young bands from pandering to larger corporate record labels.

Johnny Foreigner

Johnny Foreigner

Boy-girl yelpy vocals, busted up charity shop kids keyboards and Sonic Youth steam-train guitars' - The Fly. 'Wielding Pavement-esque spec-rock as artfully as they siphon Pixies' eyeball-splitting roar. They're simply sticking up two fists at the bore-rock masses' - NME.
