Underground DJ, producer and engineer, Calvin was part of Beat Happening, an underground rock band that became an integral part of the Washington music scene. He also formed Dub Narcotic Sound System and also performed as a member of The Halo Benders. His label K Records continues to attempt to dissuade young bands from pandering to larger corporate record labels.

The solo electronic project of Kieran Hebden of post-rock band, Fridge. What you get here is a beguiling and baffling journey into sound; a mixture of folk-inflected electronica and lo-fi murmurings incorporating elements of jazz, techno and hip-hop. His first two releases were NME singles of the week and his 2005 album, Everything Ecstatic has secured him the title of King of folktronica.

Often associated with his friends, The Moldy Peaches, New York's Jeffrey Lewis peddles a similar peddle of lo-fi anti-folk indie singing and songwriting, combining equal measures of humour, innocence, fragility and sadness. Hearing her voice is like being wrapped in silk sheets and slowly rocked into a blissful state of peace and relaxation. She is compared to Nick Cave and PJ Harvey, but Nina Nastasia has a dark, unnerving strength all of her own. The US has produced few original singer-songwriters so in touch with its contemporary condition.
Guitar based indie pop from Selkirk in Scotland. This band stands out straight away with their gentle piano dominated opening bars progressing to 3-minute slices of urgent indie-punk, with a nicely shambling, lo-fi production.
