The European Capital of Culture is a project commissioned by the EU to emphasise the cultures that spread across the continent. Each year, many cities compete to be crowned the European Capital of Culture; and since 2000, the award has often gone to two or more cities. For 2008, Liverpool shares the title with Stavanger in Norway. Throughout the year, over 350 events will take place in Liverpool under The European Capital of Culture banner.
