Well, if you get balcony tickets, pretty good view from everywhere, also not bad at all on the floor - Pretty good prices for beer and a good pint. Not much queing as theres plenty of bands about.
Bad points - Floor is digusting, sticky and at times difficult to walk on, its THAT bad. Also if you go to a gig and theres a bar night on aftre - they throw EVERYONE out and charge them for entrance to the club nights. Not a good venue at all!
I went too see the Quireboys and the Pogues here a week or two before xmas so I got to sample both rooms. I agree the carpets are stickier than a teenager's curtains but the sound in this place is amazing. No pass out for smokers is a pain but that's starting to happen at most venues.
We went to see Duff Mckagan at the Sheffield Academy 2. My friend smokes and when going outside for a cigarette she was told by security that there were no pass outs so if she left the building to smoke she wouldn't be allowed back in unless she paid again. The tickets were £15 so obviously she did not take them up on this offer!
There were no signs on entering the venue regarding the no pass out rule.
Tip: Wipe your feet on the way OUT or you’ll make the rest of Sheffield filthy.
This venue has been a church, a cinema and a very scummy nightclub (Poxy Roxy’s) amongst other things in it’s time. It was eventually closed for years after the lease ran out and it was wrecked by a ‘foam party’ that filled the dance hall with bubbles made from Netto washing-up liquid that caused many of the guests to suffer an allergic reaction!
The venue was re-opened and relaunched on 11th April 2008 as Sheffield’s branch of the Carling Academy chain with a performance by Sheffield’s own ‘Reverand and the Makers’. Apparently ?3.5m has been spent on it, but the carpets are still sticky and the décor is the same as it was 15 years ago (including the pink neon ‘Roxy Lounge’ sign upstairs).
There are several rooms within the venue and on normal club nights they have different styles of music in each, but the main stage has been host to dozens of bands already since it’s ‘re-vamp’, including Good Charlotte, the Fratellis, Little Man Tate and The Kooks.
