Blackpool's Winter Gardens first opened to the public on 11 July 1878, with a lavish ceremony attended by the Lord Mayor of London and Mayors and Mayoresses from 68 towns throughout the country. The scale and sheer architectural richness of The Winter Gardens provides a vibrant theatrical and entertainment experience for both the audience and the performers. Over the years, locals and holiday-makers have enjoyed concert parties, exhibitors, ballroom dancing and international stars of stage, screen and radio. The ground floor of The Winter Gardens includes The Empress Ballroom, The Arena The Opera House, The Pavilion Theatre & Horseshoe, The Olympia, The Floral Hall, The Theatre Bar and The Galleon Bar. The first floor venues are The Spanish Hall and The Windsor Bar, The Baronial Hall and The Renaissance Room. Entrances to the Winter Gardens are available at Church Street from St John's Square and also from Coronation Street opposite the Houndshill Centre. Venues within the building are on multiple levels. If entering the building from Church Street access to the public areas is on one level. If entering from the Coronation Street entrance a lift from street level is available - this can be found to the left of the entrance.
