If you should find yourself at a loose end in London's Oxford Street on the morning of Thursday 13th November, then you'll be ideally placed to look in at the world famous 100 Club at 11:30am, where, for a mere £7.00, you can get three hours of superb music from Pete Lay's Gambit Jazzmen. The club is better known these days as a rock and pop venue, but for decades its stage has been graced by the top names in jazz and its Thursday lunchtime sessions - hosted every month by the Ken Colyer Trust - show that the music of New Orleans is alive and kicking in the 21st century and waiting to be discovered by a new generation. The Gambits are one of the best Trad outfits around and with the bar open from 11:30am serving real ales and Continental lagers, what better way to escape from the Christmas shopping?!
The 100 Club is my favourite venue. It's a small, underground venue at 100 Oxford Street, and despite having two thick pillars near the stage there's no other place where I feel closer to the music. The place hasn't changed in decades. Legendary figures have played here, and still do...
The bar is pretty good, quick service and very drinkable Flowers IPA if you like your real ale.
Gigs often start and finish fairly early here so don't tarry in the boozer beforehand!
