On the other side of the coin, I was there a couple of months ago to see MGMT and although it may have been something to do with the crowd (I've never seen so many people trying to take their own photos with mobile phones), me and my mate were driven to distraction by people going up and down those bloody stairs throughout the whole show (one of the better views is from the right hand side just at the bottom of the stairs, and a lot of people actually use the stairs as a vantage point, so it isn't that easy going up and down during the shows). As far as MGMT is concerned, I suppose it's what you have to expect with students... :-)
Ive been to Rock City recently and have to say it is a great place with a fantastic atmosphere. The only downside for me was having to 'fight' my way through the (very disgruntled) crowd to get to the ladies toilets. I wish they were better signposted. I found out at the end though, you can go down the stairs to get to the toilets, avoiding the crowd. Oh well, I know now for next time! Better signage please!!!
Pre-Rock City 'drinks' have always included going to bars like 'Tap and Tumbler' (great Rock/Metal/alt jukebox) nearby, 'Foremans' - punk bar with yellow painted front near TGI Fridays; 'Old Angel' in Hockley, 'the Salutation' on Maid Marian way... all great for music, and for those of a Rock/Metal/Goth/Alt persuasion....
Been going there on and off since 1986, and whilst it has changed structurally, and with regard to its genre-specific nights over the years, it has lost none of its appeal. A GREAT live venue -seen MANY bands play their first tours there (STP, RATM..) and some top bands (Pantera, Soundgarden, Killing Joke, Slaughter, Vixen, Poison, Tool, A Perfect Circle, Ataris....and MANY more).. And a great place to go for nites out. NEVER any trouble inside or out....
