Tip: There are several bars inside the venue but drinks are expensive so I’d recommend any of the bars opposite the entrance instead (Weatherspoons, RSVP, etc) to drink in before the start of a performance. However, once you’re in, there’s an alcove directly behind the right-hand doors as you walk through the foyer and in it is a black leather 2-seater sofa. Most people don’t see it so claim that after you’ve been to the bar at the interval and you don’t have to stand up for 25 minutes!
Sheffield City Hall isn’t just for tribute bands and pantomimes. It has played host to acts such as The Beatles and the Halle Orchestra to, more recently, The Last Shadow Puppets. The main Oval Hall seats over 2,000 people over 3 levels which, despite its size, makes seeing anything a more insular experience than the average Arena gig. It also features a ballroom with a sprung dance floor on the first floor.
Backing onto this is the smaller 500-seater Memorial Hall. This is a fabulous room, which is warm, clean, cosy and has a small stage and small bar that serves drinks right up to the start of a gig and in the interval, which makes this part of the venue comfortable and intimate. Every Friday and Saturday, Phoenix Nights and Radio Sheffield star Toby Foster comperes the amazing ‘Last Laugh Comedy Club’ in the Memorial Hall, which guarantees 3 excellent comedians and a top night out.
Have seen Clare Teal, Lee Memphis King,Alan Price, Gretchen Peters in the memorial hall. Staus Quo, Halle & others, Swan Lake,Lee Memphis King,Jo Brand,Gary Mullen (Queen),The 3 B's,to name a few in the Oval hall. All been great. And I have not mentioned going to the Arena, Crucible, Lyceum. Brilliant nights all of them. The one I missed ,through apparant secrecy for a Charity event , was Bryan Adams, but as I had seen him a month previously at the Arena I was not too upset .
Sheffield is a great place for entertainment, and t
he transport links are good too.
