Event Date: April 29, 2009
Event Venue: Belgrade Theatre, Coventry
Having seen the show many times over the past 20 years, I have to say that there was something about the performance I saw this week at Coventry's Belgrade Theatre that made it without doubt the best I have seen. Maureen Nolan headed a cast of outstanding performers and while there have been many memorable performances by individual cast members in the previous versions I have seen over the years, this particular ensemble has to be the best I have seen gathered together in one show!
The cast were no doubt helped by the superb orchestra and excellent lighting, as well as an almost perfect sound balance. I have seen Maureen Nolan in the West End production (and she was excellent) but I feel she is now putting so much more emotion into her part, both from an acting point of view and especially her vocal performances. Sean Jones (Mickey) never fails to impress, and again, just seems to get better and better as the years go by. He and Simon Willmont (Eddie) worked really well together. The narrator can be a difficult part, not least because he has to be invisible to the other characters and yet have a stage presence that captivates the audience everytime he appears. I felt that Robbie Scotcher was just right for this part - darkly menacing, not too over-powering yet delivering every line with just the right amount of whatever it is you need to deliver just the right amount of! He also spoke and sang with absolute clarity and didn't over-do the Liverpool accent! It seems unfair to have singled out the above actors because every single member of the cast was absolutely brilliant.
Thank you to everyone involved for what was yet again a memorable night at the theatre!
Blood Brothers is a wonderful show. The story is so powerful. The songs are both lively and emotional.
I have seen it countless times and never tire of it.
I have seen it in London with Stephanie Lawrence
Lyn Paul and Linda Nolan. It was such a thrill when
my mother and I saw Barbara Dickson in the Anniversay Tour at Liverpool Empire. To actually see
it in Liverpool was amazing!
I have seen it in Worthing and Crawley since then and
I am planning to go again next year! Willy Russel's
work is so entertaining I loved Educating Rita too!
The actors playing young children are hilarious and the
way they grow up before your very eyes is staggering!
I laughed till I cried at the children's mannerisms.
I have yet to see how it really ends. My heart is
racing and it always brings a lump to my throat.
The actors are completely living out the story and look
totally drained by the end.In fact it is not untill the 2nd
or even 3rd curtain call that they seem to recover!
This is a must see Musical and if you have already seen it, you like me, will be back for more!
When is it going to come out on dvd?..PLEASE.
I saw Blood Brothers at the Theatre Royal in Newcastle. The performance was outstanding and i would definitely recommend going to see it.
It is an emotional performance that gets the audience involved. the last scene, in my opinion was most effective. When mrs johnstone (Played by Maureen Rolan) covers her son's dead bodies with coats in the last scene, me and many others in the audience had tears running down our faces!
A fantastic production! GO AND SEE IT.
Blood Brothers words cannot describe the inner feeling of emotion felt during the performance, laughter, dispare, sorrow " it's real life as was and possibly of today for some people", this peice of drama has it all, Leaving the theatre is not an empty feeling of just another show, I have seen Linda Nolan as leading lady and Just this week Marty Caine both are wonderful, however the whole cast from the latest show in Derby has to be praised, they create the emotion with real feeling I cannot list the names or characters.
because of space, the finale for me was the cast taking the bow, still full of emotion the girl who played the wife and girlfriend of the brothers still had tears in her eyes as were mine, Thank you Derby Assembly Rooms for bringing a truley wonderful show to Derby, more of these please.
My Wife and I saw this show last week in Swansea. It is the 4th time we have seen it and it gets better every time. This performance was easily the best one so far. Everyone deserved the standing ovation they received.
