Saturday 1st August 2009 was to be a sad day for British music; as this would be the last performance rock legends Thunder would give in their 20 year history.
I had concerns that they would not get a very good reception, as they are quite a different act to most of those also playing at the Sonisphere Festival. Fortunately I could not have been proved more wrong.
Half an hour before the band hit the stage, the Bohemia tent became jam packed to the rafters with fans chanting ‘Thunder’, when the strains of AC/DC’s Thunderstruck rang out the atmosphere became electric.
The band exploded onto the stage, with their early 90’s hit ‘Dirty Love’. Charismatic lead singer Danny Bowes soon had the crowd eating out of his hand, getting them to sing along, clap, jump and wave their arms like lunatics.
Other favourites followed with Higher Ground, Low Life in High Places, Gimme Some Lovin, Love Walked In and The Devil Made Me Do It.
Bowes bounced around the stage with the energy of the Duracell bunny, whilst the rest of the band, consisting of Lead guitarist & songwriter Luke Morley, guitarist & keyboard player Ben Matthews, bassist Chris Childs and drummer Harry James made every second on stage count.
All too soon they played their last number, the catchy ‘I Love You More Than Rock N’ Roll’. The band stood for rapturous applause, and Danny thanked the fans for supporting them over the last twenty years, before leaving the stage.

Thunder may be gone, but they certainly will never be forgotten.

I have seen thunder some 5 times and wonder, with SO many albums behind them, why they are not a bigger band than they are?
They have some great easy songs to sing along with and have a thumping great rhythem to all their set.
Back in the early days I was working in my garage, listening to the radio when the song "Back Street Symthony" came on the air.
I wrote the song name on a bit of 4X2 and said to myself---"What a great tune, and what a great sound". They will be a huge band.
I still would like to see them at big arena's with Oasis as support!!!
Long live Thunder.
(I still have the bit of 4X2)

I've been a Thunder fan for nearly 20 years.  They are a fantastic rock band who never really got the recognition they deserved.  It was great to be present at their final gig at Sonisphere.  I couldn't help thinking that they should have been on one of the bigger stages rather than in the small Bohemia tent. Their live shows were always excellent, and Saturday night was no exception.  They started the show with their hit 'Dirty Love' which for most Thunder fans was a surprise, as at most of their gigs in the last few years they usually ended their shows with that track.  Danny Bowes, the lead singer, is always able to get a crowd motivated with his wit and charm; the tent was jammed full of fans who were dancing, singing along, clapping and jumping! A great gig.  A nice way to end Saturday at Sonisphere, which for me was a dream line-up of bands.

I won't be too popular for this review, but it's just my opinion! I love Thunder, their music is fantastic and they never seemed to get the breaks they certainly deserved. Knowing that the Sonisphere gig was to be their last and their slot would only be short, I somehow expected it to be more about the music than the performance.

I would say that a large proportion of people in the Bohemia tent were in there because they already loved Thunder, I was massively disappointed that they felt it necessary to whip up the crowd with so much 'come on clap your hands' and the like. The hands would have clapped, we all would have sung anyway. I honestly felt it a lost opportunity for them to go out with a musical bang, rather than a  crowd participation exercise.

I still love 'em though and forgive them. They were my main reason for attending Sonisphere in the first place but I felt a little cheated because my faves weren't played. Or maybe it was because I hadn't had any beer:-)
