Our 5th PRO show in the last 15 years and it's still one of our favourite shows. The line-up of virtuoso's has a couple of changes (the first female? - a saxophonist) but we still recognise most faces, and you'll never forget Simon Townsend the pianist who could do a credible turn as a stand-up comedian (now a BBC radio presenter). The touch of light comedy was appreciated by all between the beautifully arranged classics swing and hot dance numbers from the 20/30s - Well known songs like Putting on Ritz, Tiger Rag, Anything goes, Love is the sweetest thing, Cotton Club, and their signature tune of course - Home in Pasadena. Supreme vocalist was Duncan Galloway. We're in the younger age bracket of audience of early 50s but have a very wide range of musical tastes leaning more to 60-90s music but this band is highly recommended as they carry you away to a different era. Check their website for CD, videos and full repertoire listings.
The Stables is an ideal venue and beautiful sound, we'll be back there soon for Roxy Music and Bee Gees, Coco Montoya and some rock! [less]

Live Review of Imelda May

Event Venue: Wavendon, The Stables

Last night was first time we'd seen her live - not even on TV. But heard one song on radio, bought CD and had to see her! Wow, what an original sound today (well admit her excellent compositions are mainly based on early 50s RnR, Rockabilly, Skiffle, C&W) and it's a great show - yes totally agree with all said by 2 previous reviewers.
This is great perfect small venue which I've reviewd about 30 times and audiences are usually very reserved, but it was full (450?) and when all give immediate standing ovation, that is very rare, which tells its own story; she was visibly moved, never left the stage (and had to be called back like most acts) so she could cram in an extra song - she then sang an incredible version of Tainted Love (please put on her album!). Lets not forget the great 4-pce band who gave us a memorable performance, with authentic classic instruments.
If I'm going to be picky I'd say have a pianist so she can perform her 3-4 slower 'french cafe' style songs (like Madeline Peyroux). I thought the vocal was a bit lost in sound mix (possibly cos I was deafened by the support act who started loud then got louder). I'd like to see her do some move dance moves with the band members. But heh - just please come back soon and play 2 nights! Please don't make her too famous so she only plays arenas!! [less]

Review of Warwick Arts Centre, Coventry

In past 2 years seen Madeline Peyroux, Pink Martinis and Bill Bryson (Funny US Comedy novelist show about UK). All sell-outs. Great venue, clear views, perfect acoustics - wonderful evenings.

Easy to book. Approx 1800 capacity? Venue has loads of car-parking, can be hectic getting out onto main roads afterwards but minor issue. Arrive early and beat the students to the bar and order 1/2 time drinks too! Some of the helpers (Students) sometimes unsure which doors to use but minor inconvenience. [less]

Dame Cleo Laine was in the audience for this concert (we are extremely thankful she and Johnny Dankworth have built this wonderful theatre). Everyone had a thoroughly enjoyable night of virtuoso performances from this quartet (over 2 hours). Whilst I'm not a connoisseur of jazz, just intrigued by the advert - and having heard some Grappelli many years ago (with Yehudi Menuin) - I could appreciate that this was a masterclass in pushing this jazz improv style. Interpretations included Bach Fugue, Handel's Air and Gershwin; along with Grappelli classics, and some wonderful original material - playing conversations with amongst these four. All beautifully performed. Great usage of electric violin foot pedals: fuzz boxes and wah wah. Christian announced he was inspired at the age of 5 way back in 1978 by a concert by Stephan Grappelli at this very venue - I'm sure the master would have been delighted to have heard this show! Highly recommended [less]

Well, now we've been I can say how pleasantly surprised we were by everything! Saw Maet Loaf, Cavern Beatles, Legends Bob Marley / Johnny 2 bad here all over Xmas week so quite a range of music. But they cover last 5 decades of music from soul, prog rock (e.g.yes), head bangin', blues, pop, all rock etc. Check out ents24 and their own website but holds 500? Huge hall with great views, mainly standing but flexible seating, no pillars, nice friendly crowds - no trouble here, they attract the best tributes and orginal bands, great sound, show adverts for upcoming bands (great idea but too much bass on soundtrack?). Got 56 page booklet too with more info on gigs, 12 room hotel (saw one room for inspection and was very clean and new). Wife was bit dubious prior to viewing (as bit fussy!) but would be very happy to stay here - same standard as Travel Lodge but cheaper, smaller, includes B&B and adjacent! - space unimportant as only sleeping pre/after night I guess. Gig bar good (love the lighting), staff great, engineer/duty manager Sean was very pleasant and gave us room tour (Ta - like Planet Hokum CD ?- band will come to the open mic session which start in March 09). Clean loos, seats and tables around walls, easy to find as 2 mins from pedstrian precinct, 10 mins from J10 M6. Tips - safe illuminated car park behind, 2nd one further down road (NHS), front entrance thru' Woody's bar (Love the Roy Wood / Wizzard theme!), had a very nice Indian meal next door (tell them if in rush for gig and will oblige), also opposite are Fish & Chip takeway, indian, Taxi rank and police station !
Come along and support this venue - we travelled 2 hours - its like a mecca for music fans. Need more reviews please. [less]
