wow! first time seen this guy after catching him on one of Jools Holland's Later... prog's.
What a set!. The Studio holds maybe 200 tops? So, very intimate, he strolls on, sits down, starts playing. The foot is going, not banging out the rhythm, but swaying, as if every note hurts and its a good set. Yeah, he doesn't talk a lot, as he (reluctantly) admits but that leaves more time for good playing and singing.
Its a good mix of very laid back blues, sometimes a bit country orientated (But not too much otherwise I wouldn't be there) The only disappointment is that, although he is an absolutely ace slide guitarist, he doesn't play any.
Still on AG's scale of gigs, this 4.5 /5.

I have never been to a gig like this. Wisely the Apollo took out the seats so there must have been 4 thousand in there I guess. The band came on and the roar nearly blew em back stage again! And it just carried on like that; every song sung jointly with the audience. The band reckon this was the best gig of the European tour. It was just as if the band and the crowd were one unit for the entire show. It was awesome; I was hoarse for 2 days. Catch 'em next time what ever you do. [less]

I was 2 rows from the front (seated) when they strode on stage. Of course they had had a low profile for a number of years and I hadn't seen them since Knebworth, but boy they were just as good. OK some familiar faces are long gone now, but the old magic was still there. When they came on the whole audience stood up and we continued standing for the next 2 hours, culminating with DvZ walking off stage leaving US to sing Freebird with the band. And we did! It still sends shivers down my spine to remember that and I'll be at the Apollo again next year.

What can I say? Too long since they were here last time, but better, so worth the wait. Fans of FZ will NOT be disappointed. Dweezil has put a lot of effort into his own playing and this has translated into the band's performance as well. Zappa songs are performed as Frank would have liked them and the new singer was a complete revelation. Drafted in at a late stage in tour planning, he just blew everyone away. The set changed most nights so check it out. They may not be back here for a couple of years , who knows? But put 'em on your favourites list. If you like great geetar playing, look no further. Been a big fan for a long time but not seen the fella for a while. Good news is he's just as good as ever. Guitar work is tight when it needs to be but with some beautiful rambling solos. Bridge of Sighs was worth the £17 entry fee alone. They're a 4 piece now with a singer who just sings, which means all the band can get on with their own jobs and this they do very well. Try and catch him if you can. One of the UK's greatest and under rated guitarists. [less]
