Primal Scream creates the ultimate rock ‘n’ roll party via an impeccable and innovative CV that has set pop precedents. This iconic act has delivered aural adventure across three different decades-and, there are no signs of the standards slipping on the 2008 ‘Beautiful Future’ album!
As a live entity the band can go one faster, one louder and one better-and, a colossal Cardiff University gig displayed the diverse and dexterous nature of the Primal Scream tune tapestry. A gathered Friday throng ended their week on a high via a concert that meandered between a series of sublime sonic stations! The cool charisma of Bobbie Gillespie takes focal point as his accomplices are akin to a runaway juggernaut jumping every red light. The core of the fresh material is radio friendly, but the gung ho gear changes of a well-oiled combo ensures a cutting edge, stage stomp! The crowd danced and waved and smiled and sang as their heroes were ‘Movin’ on Up’ to the upper echelons of their ‘Riot City Blues’! A multitude of anthems are unleashed as the lads delve in to their immense and immaculate back catalogue-and, after around 90 minutes of high octane sounds the punters still demanded more! Primal Scream carries the torch for a good time vibe-and, long may their energetic industry prosper! [less]

The post-punk pulse of Midland mavericks The Nightingales was at the forefront of the 80's, Radio One schedule of the late great DJ, John Peel. The Nightingales leader, Rob Lloyd has returned to post millennium action with new incarnations of his cult band, and a show at the Buffalo Bar, Cardiff was a monumental rock 'n' roll triumph.
Take the nuances of Captain Beefheart, throw in some Link Wray plus a portion of The Fall and then add the unique Lloyd lyrical loaded lustre-and, the raw power of a cult act becomes a tad clearer. However, there is much more to this dynamic force!
The fiery four that make up the current line up do not rest on any previous achievements, for this is not a nostalgia trip! This is very much 2009!
A punk confrontation and post-punk discordance are joined by rockabilly rhythms, palatable pop and a unique stage presence that even makes the odd drum solo acceptable. Lloyd enters the arena of the punter and anti-serenades anyone who comes in to his view, and to add to this manic mingling the humour is aplenty as ad-libs dovetail with the fruits of a colossal, aural arsenal.
The songs interweave, head off in to new pastures and the element of surprise combines with the off kilter behaviour of a truly, original front man. Newer material is joined by a rollercoaster ride of past glory-and, just when you think that a cover of The Troggs 60's hit 'I can't control Myself' is off the cuff the lads then throw in a soaring version of the Status Quo smash 'Paper Plane'!
The Nightingales playing was tighter than a duck's rear end soldered together with krypton and these guys offer 110% energy-and, then they push on to a new level of drive! This was a fine gig from a combo who you are well advised to witness because to sample this motor music Midas is an imperative experience! [less]

28 years after their split, the truly great and sadly underrated Magazine are back-and, that is good news for anyone with the power of hearing! The original crew of: Howard Devoto, Dave Formula, John Doyle and Barry Adamson are joined by Noko (a partner to Devoto in the post Magazine act Luxuria). A missing component is the late, great John McGeoch whose sonic skills helped shape the post-punk guile of Magazine as they fine tuned the fire of late 70’s angst to form a fresh and formidable sound!
The HMV Forum, Kentish Town welcomed Devoto and devotees; and, Radiohead personnel had already approved of an Oxford gig with the confession that the might of Magazine had initiated their own work. The Light Pours out of Me opens a scintillating set unveiling beauty via the skewed soul of: Thank You, Parade, I want to burn Again and You never knew Me-and beast via the potent punch of: Give me Everything, Shot by both Sides, I love you, You big Dummy and Rhythm of Cruelty. The gold of both beauty and the beast lies within Motorcade, Permafrost, Back to Nature and Feed the Enemy; and there is also sublime, cerebral power pop of: Because you’re Frightened, Model Worker, 20 years Ago and A song from under the floorboards with its lustrous lyric ‘I am angry, I am ill & I’m as ugly as Sin’.
There is more as Devoto even dips in to his solo career but the quality never diminishes. The velvet vocals of female aides also accompany the devilish Devoto-and, Noko is a fine stand in as Adamson, Doyle and Formula also retain their edge! The passion, precision and professionalism from the heroes of the hour garnered mass appreciation and many thanks to Magazine for a golden gig!
N.B. The new Touch & Go; Anthology 02.78-06.81 and the upcoming Dave Formula CD Satellite Sweetheart featuring Devoto, Adamson, Doyle and McGeoch! For more details go to www.wire-sound.com and www.myspace.com/magazineofficial

THE SPECIALS
The Specials continue their 30th Anniversary celebrations with the announcement of the final dates of their tour. The band kick off another set of shows on 1st November in Cardiff and continue around the country for the month.
Their earlier dates in April and May of this year sold out in record time, and received spectacular reactions and reviews, with every venue on the tour packed to the rafters and the band’s classic tracks sounding ‘eerily relevant’ to the current times according to The Independent On Sunday. With The Daily Telegraph praising ‘one of the greatest live bands this country has ever produced’ and The Evening Standard acclaiming a band ‘spectacularly and life affirmingly reborn’, the second leg of the tour sees the band visit those concert halls that missed out on the first leg before a return to London for two massive nights at the Hammersmith Apollo to follow their five sold out night’s at Brixton.
