Evan Christopher and Django a la Creole played a stunning set high on emotional intensity on Monday night. What a way to finish this GB tour before heading off to record their next album! This was Le Quecumbar par excellence: as the music took hold, you could have been in simmering '30s Paris one moment, sweltering New Orleans the next. The combination of maestro of the clarinet Evan Christopher backed by such an accomplished rhythm section as Dave Kelbie and Sebastian Girardot with virtuoso guitar from David Blenkhorn provides a wonderful musical texture.
This is a wonderful match of Louisiana jazz and Carribbean influence to the Django Gypsy style with Duke Ellington and Hoagie Carmichael thrown in. The musical nuances are underpinned by a deep knowledge of the genre and deft musicianship. The whole event storms into life with the deep feeling and utter enjoyment of the music from all members of the group. [less]

Happened on this ensemble by a lucky accident. I went to a charity event (Firefly) in Doncaster where Ruffanti played an outstanding set about halfway through the evening. What can I say? It was a delightful surprise to hear such a first class group of musicians and I was disappointed that they were not on stage longer. The excellent vocals were well supported by perfectly pitched musicianship. The lively rythms in a couple of the pieces had me wishing I could get up out of my seat and dance. The take on Tainted Love and Get It On were such a surprise - now Marc Almond is no longer the person who springs to mind when I hear Tainted Love, such was Jayne's subtle but deliberate phrasing of this song.
I would recommend that you go see this ensemble when they are next at a venue near you. An excellent entertainment is on the cards for you. [less]

I saw this band through being invited to attend via a mailing list that I didn't realise I was a member of. I was aware of the throat singing techniques and had a sample or two on KLF albums. Even so, I was not prepared for the spine tingling experience of a Huun Huur Tu concert.
The band/group managed to convey the spirituality of Tuvu and the reverence of the horse was evident in the underlying beats of some of the songs. My friends mocked me for attending the gig until they listened to the disco mix CD that i bought at the gig - they were instant converts. Don't miss out on an unforgettable experience if they ever come your way. I can't wait for their return..... [less]

I saw this band 2 years ago as a favour to a friend who had a spare ticket. I had not heard of them at that point but was totally blown away by the energy of the audience (who were mostly 20 years older than me!). The band were totally amazing, the music uplifting and it was one of the most exciting gigs I have been to. The atmosphere was electric! [less]

If you ever needed a demonstration of somebody using the voice as an instrument - as well as the rest of his body - then Rory Mcleod is the man to see.
I came to his music late through the enthusiasm of a new partner and how I wish I had known about him before and grown up with him!
The songwriting is real and personal and all his experiences be they painful or joyful are addressed in the same dextrous and sometimes brutally honest, fashion.
I am not a person given to public emotion but I have to admit that when he played "Hug you like a Mountain" - I cried (albeit quietly)!
I urge anyone who likes their music challenging and thought provoking rather than the mushy pap fed to us on mainstream radio and television to make an effort to go and see Rory - you won't be sorry. [less]
