Recommendation for Mad Professor
by Lyndie from East London

Absolutely wicked -I saw  Mad Prof at Jazz Cafe earlier this year and we jammed 'til our feet hurt. If you like old skool reggae with a funky twist this is the sound for you.

I've enjoyed listening to Zion Train since hearing the single of 'Rise' in the mid/late 90s.  Their Grow Together CD used to be my christmas afternoon secret CD i would listen to, to escape my family for an hour or so.  I've wanted to see them for a long time, but no one was really into seeing them......  Up steps Super Sarah to come with me to see them at Cambridge.  We arrived late, but the staff was sound and let us buy a ticket still.  This was the best night i have had since........ ok, so it was one of my best nights out and the best gig i have been to.  I'd heard of Perch before but i didn't know what to expect from the MC and didn't know what anyone looked like.  Turns out the MC is called Dubdadda and he is fantastic....We were p*ssing ourselves laughing, not in a "ha-ha" way, but a.... "yes - we're loving this" way, he is a class act, both entertainer and mc.  Got us both skanking within seconds.  Fantastic tracks and was nice to hear some new tracks to help reintroduce me to their music.  All ages were at this event as i'd hoped, from 14 to circa 60(!)  I'd hoped they play some more faster tracks too,but that will teach us to be late(!)  Will definately see them again, hopefully with Sarah.  Thanks everyone who helped make this a fantastic night for us both.  Zion Train... one Perch, one Dubdadda , one Bigga, one Hake..... One Love.  And for Sarah....... one Ninjaaaaaa! x [less]

Recommendation for The Ruts

The Ruts came on the tail of a 1st hit of 70’s punk & an expansive mix of power & reggae forged a valiant & visceral voice that fell in between The Clash & The Jam. A series of singles soared e.g. In a Rut/Babylon’s Burning/Something that I Said/West One (Shine on Me)/Jah Wars & Staring at the rude Boys (as recently sampled by Lethal Bizzle)-& The Crack LP (Virgin) went Top 20. As a growing consensus slated new wave rebellion as burnt out The Ruts defied the critics with their memorable motor melodies & pertinent punk poetry. However, in mid ’80 lead singer Malcolm Owen fell prey to drug excesses & The Ruts ceased to exist. The Ruts morphed in to Ruts DC-but, delving in to deep dub the punk punters moved away-& by ‘82 this chapter was closed. In ‘07 Ruts guitarist Paul Fox was battling terminal lung cancer (& he has since passed away). As a fundraiser for Foxy & cancer research Sarah Pink put in a tireless effort to wed the remaining Ruts & Black Flag icon Henry Rollins at a Carling Academy Islington show 16/7/07. The gig also included sets from The UK Subs/Tenpole Tudor/Misty in Roots/John
Otway/The Damned/TV Smith (The Adverts)/Tom Robinson & Splodgenessabounds. An ’08 dynamic DVD honours Paul Fox via a major gig in punk rock history-&, every inch of Indie-Pendent 78 could be devoted to this regal release such is its magnitude! The Ruts with Henry Rollins in London 16th July 2007 DVD is a sonic tonic that offers a surfeit of survivors whose fire can still destroy a host of young wannabes! The Ruts/Rollins link is a brutal blast of riotous rebellion that levitates the legacy of Owen/Fox/Ruffy & Jennings. This visual document forms a unique bond between the cream of the UK/US scenes & opens the door for new + old fans to celebrate The Ruts! Punters can also savour: A stellar cast of punk rock; the rhythm of reggae royals-Misty in Roots; & bonus disc of chat! Go forth!
