High Barn, Braintree
by Theresa S from Billericay
Went to High Barn for the first time last Wednesday to see Ben Waters Band. Fantastic venue with truly wonderful acoustics. Easy parking and a good pub with excellent food just a few hundred yards away.
Can't wait to return.

A great place for trad jazz! Although the pavilion has been built, and extended, for use by the cricket club (now fielding four teams in the Hertfordshire League) the musicians find the acoustics excellent - those run from the bright new players like Adrian Cox, the Martyn Brothers, etc. to the veterans of forty years at the top, like John Arthy, John Crocker and Graham Collicott.
I suggest you try the place yourself; when people travel there every week from 40 or more miles away, there must be some powerful attraction. Have a look at the website - www.bayjazzclub.co.uk/ - and choose your band. There is no one school; if it sounds good, whether New Orleans, Frisco, Chicago or Walsall, it could be there. The bar is reasonably priced and has won awards for the draught ale, but if you want to eat first (the band starts at 8.30 every Tuesday) I suggest you pop over the road to The Robin Hood, which carries the recommendation of several bands. What a wonderful evening - 30 (or so) hits from the fabulous library of the four seasons, presented with magnificent energy and authenticity from the East Coast Boys, to a packed house.
I recommend this show to anyone who likes the four seasons - you won't be disappointed.... [more]
