This venue has been a church, a cinema and a very scummy nightclub (Poxy Roxy’s) amongst other things in it’s time.  It was eventually closed for years after the lease ran out and it was wrecked by a ‘foam party’ that filled the dance hall with bubbles made from Netto washing-up liquid that caused many of the guests to suffer an allergic reaction!

The venue was re-opened and relaunched on 11th April 2008 as Sheffield’s branch of the Carling Academy chain with a performance by Sheffield’s own ‘Reverand and the Makers’.  Apparently ?3.5m has been spent on it, but the carpets are still sticky and the décor is the same as it was 15 years ago (including the pink neon ‘Roxy Lounge’ sign upstairs).

There are several rooms within the venue and on normal club nights they have different styles of music in each, but the main stage has been host to dozens of bands already since it’s ‘re-vamp’, including Good Charlotte, the Fratellis, Little Man Tate and The Kooks. [less]

I took my grand-daughter to see High School Musical on ice. The sound, special effects and lighting were great. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I have seen many great bands and artistes over the years there, and it is always a fab night out! The only down-side is that I don't think it is signposted enough and the queues of cars before and after a show are horrendous. But of course that is to be expected. Inside the arena are hand-rails going up and down to your seats - a feature which is lacking at the m.e.n arena [very scary]! especially in high heels!]  the variety of shows and bands is fantastic -theres something for everyone of all ages. Sheffield City Hall isn’t just for tribute bands and pantomimes.  It has played host to acts such as The Beatles and the Halle Orchestra to, more recently, The Last Shadow Puppets.  The main Oval Hall seats over 2,000 people over 3 levels which, despite its size, makes seeing anything a more insular experience than the average Arena gig.  It also features a ballroom with a sprung dance floor on the first floor.
Backing onto this is the smaller 500-seater Memorial Hall.  This is a fabulous room, which is warm, clean, cosy and has a small stage and small bar that serves drinks right up to the start of a gig and in the interval, which makes this part of the venue comfortable and intimate.  Every Friday and Saturday, Phoenix Nights and Radio Sheffield star Toby Foster comperes the amazing ‘Last Laugh Comedy Club’ in the Memorial Hall, which guarantees 3 excellent comedians and a top night out.
