An Axe are a melancholy blend of Nick Cave melodrama, Shadows twang and Roy Orbison croon. Formed in the Autumn of 2008 by members of various bands from the Decorum stable, a shared love of Werner Herzog & 1950s pop led the four members to create a sound thats simple and direct; relying on song writing and melody to lift songs as opposed to layers of effects. They attempt to weave dense tapestries with sparse arrangements and meld the personal with the historical. An albums worth of songs were written in kitchens, bedrooms and living rooms across Bristol before being whittled down to a concise statement of intent in four track debut EP 'Some, When Alone, Cease To Exist'. Recorded in the depths of a church crypt in the middle of winter by their pianist, James A Holland, the EP captures the claustrophobic nature of the surroundings whilst evoking the high plains soundscapes of Ennio Morricone. An Axe have quickly built a reputation for themselves on the Bristol live circuit and since forming just under a year ago have shared the stage with White Denim, Hjaltalin, Tall Firs, Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players, The Twilight Sad, Rose Kemp and many more.
