This Bring and Play concert organised by Music in the Round features Shostakovich’s most popular string quartet, performed by a group of talented young musicians from Sheffield who have been brought together and directed by Martin Cropper (Interim Director of Sheffield Music Academy and Head of Strings at Oakham School).

Written in Dresden in July 1960, Shostakovich dedicated this work "to the victims of fascism and war". It opens with a slow and melancholy musical theme which features throughout the work, alongside quotes from his other pieces including his Cello Concerto No.1, Piano Trio No.2 and his opera, Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District. Part of Love and War Music in the Round’s Festival of World Class Chamber Music.
