Duke Ellington's Newport Up! Collecting, Liveness, And The Seductive Menace Of Jazz Recordings Revisited

Join Dr Katherine Williams as she discusses the paradox of the 'live' jazz recording, which simultaneously offers music prized for its spontaneity and a collectible object. By considering Duke Ellington's notorious performance and recordings at the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival, Dr Williams reflects upon the implications of spontaneity, forward planning, fixed improvisation, and the recorded artefact in jazz.
