Hercules
Handel’s Hercules.
Labours accomplished, the hero returns home to his anxious wife, Dejanira. Jubilation soon turns to bloodshed, however, as jealous suspicion corrupts even the strongest of loves.
Based on Sophocles’ tragedy, The Women of Trachis, and Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Handel’s musical drama offers an unflinching exploration of the timeless concerns of classical myth: the dangers of human error and the limits of fidelity.
Hercules will be performed by a cast comprising some of the University of Oxford’s most talented singers and members of Christ Church Cathedral’s internationally-renowned choir, accompanied by an orchestra of top student musicians. The opera will be fully-staged and sung in English with subtitles.
