Festival Chorus

A glorious array of vocal talent is led by the country’s leading bass, Sir John Tomlinson, for one of the great masterworks of the 19th-century repertoire. Composed in the spirit of the great oratorios of Handel and Bach, Elijah combines Romantic lyricism and vivid melodrama in its depiction of scenes from the life of the Old Testament prophet. Hugely successful at its premiere in Birmingham in 1846, the oratorio displays Mendelssohn’s gift for melody and his brilliant writing for chorus and solo voices in a work of intense emotion and dramatic power.

This performance reunites one of the UK’s finest orchestras with conductor David Parry, who has forged a potent relationship with the Norfolk & Norwich Festival Chorus. John Tomlinson, internationally acclaimed as one of the great singers of our time, heads a world-class cast for one of the pivotal event in this year’s classical programme.

Pre-show talk at 7:00pm with David Parry and Roger Rowe, free to ticket holders.
