The Gut Girls
Twenty Seven Productions are doing something quite different in northern theatre, staging Sarah Daniels' The Gut Girls in an empty warehouse.
Set in Deptford at the turn of the 19th century, this play traces the lives of the girls who work in the gutting sheds of the Cattle Market, and how their circumstances are changed when the sheds are closed down. Although the girls are unwilling participants in a club founded by Lady Helena to find alternative employment, the results are not without tragic consequences.
"Regarded as little better than whores by their contemporaries, the gut girls are portrayed in this vigorous and intelligent play as a boisterous, beer-swilling, strong-minded bunch, handy with a knife both in the gutting shed and outside it, defiantly independent in attitude and scornful of the illusions of male supremacy" - Time Out
"A moving and vigorous celebration of women's fighting spirit" - Independent
