Gego. Line As Object

The first UK solo exhibition by pioneering Venezuelan artist Gego (Gertrud Goldschmidt 1912-94), whose groundbreaking experiments with line and space opened up the possibilities of what sculpture could be.

German born, Gego trained as an architect, before emigrating to Venezuela in 1939. Our exhibition starts in the 1950s, the decade in which Gego began exploring form and space in three dimensions; taking us from her earliest sculpture, drawn with lines of coiled aluminium, through to her 1990s works of interwoven paper. Gego's geometric webs of metal and wire will hang throughout the galleries, casting light and shadow in constant play.
