Manchester International Festival: Neneh Cherry + Rocket Number 9
One of music’s great maverick talents, singer-songwriter Neneh Cherry has spent her career out on a musical limb. From her beginnings with post-punk troublemakers Rip Rig & Panic via transatlantic chart success in the late 1980s and on to her recent work with free jazz noisemakers The Thing on last year’s explosive album The Cherry Thing, she’s surprised and thrilled audiences at every turn.
Cherry’s latest project is a potentially electrifying collaboration with Londonbased brothers Ben Page (keyboards/electronics) and Tom Page (drums/percussion), better known as RocketNumberNine.
The trio will play their new album in its entirety. The evening will marry Cherry’s distinctive vocals and irrepressible stage presence to the duo’s shapeshifting grooves and atmospherics. As always with Cherry, expect the unexpected and you won’t be disappointed.
Neneh Cherry
The daughter of painter Moki Cherry and West African percussionist Amadu Jah, Neneh was raised by her mother and stepfather Don Cherry, the celebrated jazz trumpeter and global music pioneer. Not surprising that she made her career in music. A member of ska punk band The Nails and briefly all-girl punk outfit The Slits, Neneh made her name as vocalist with funk-punks Rip Rig & Panic. In 1987, she launched her solo career with the single Buffalo Stance, the rest is history. Hit albums and hit singles quickly followed, and further established Neneh as a critically acclaimed singer and songwriter.
